FAQ

Our Persian Carpet FAQs provide answers to the most common questions about authentic handmade Persian rugs in South Africa. Whether you want to understand materials, craftsmanship, sizing, or delivery, this guide will help you make an informed decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Authentic Persian carpets are available in the following size groups:

4 x 3m
3.5 x 2.5m
3 x 2m

Note that because each carpet is handmade, these size groups do not contain carpets of uniform sizes, each is its own unique size within the general size group.

Because each carpet is handmade the exact size of each carpet varies, so make sure you check the specific dimensions of the carpet you are interested in.

Only a machine-made carpet would have an exact measurement and if it has an exact measurement, then that is a clue that it may not be an authentic hand knotted carpet.

Persian carpets are intentional pieces of art, with a long tradition that informs every aspect of of their appearance.

The colours of Persian carpets are symbolic, they carry a meaning.

Because the colours carry this symbolic meaning, authentic Persian carpets come in the following overall colours:

Red
Blue
Cream
Light Green / Pistachio

Less commonly, they can occur in:
Orange - the colour of spirit
Green

Only a machine-made carpet would occur in colours like black, grey, yellow, pink - modern synthetic colours that have originated in the mass production of modern consumer culture.

The price of an authentic handknotted Persian carpet depends on:

Its size - the bigger it is, the more resources and labour went into producing it

Its colour - some colours are more common and are therefore cheaper; other colours are rare and therefore more expensive

Its condition - new Persians are more expensive than secondhand Persians. Carpet with low wool or areas of wear generally are more affordable than carpets with high, thick wool

Its design - although all Persian artist work within the particular format of their area, some are better than others at coming up with really unique artistic expressions within that format. A really good Persian can create a palpable response, a recognition of 'Beauty'.

Those carpets are always more expensive because they're more unique, they're more tradable and the demand for them is higher.

There is no physical showroom.

Our 'showroom' is the online Whatsapp and website catalogues.

So browsing for Persians is online via the Whatsapp or website catalogue, which allow you to search by size, colour, design and price.

This saves you time and money and ensures that your purchase is a conscious choice, well thought through.

Once you've identified the carpet that meets your size, colour, design and price needs, contact Heidi on 082 936 9547 either to make an appointment to view in person in Randburg or to view by video prior to courier.

Since I work from home, viewings can be anytime that suits you, including Sundays, public holidays and in the evening.

Courier is offered in certain circumstances.

Ideally, new clients should view in person since digital transmissions do not convey colour, texture and presence with fidelity.

I work from home and viewings are by appointment in Randburg.

However, if you are not in the Johannesburg area, courier can be provided, subject to terms and conditions.

Vintage refers to any item that is over 40 years old.

Typically, such items will be good quality durable products with some areas of wear.

They may have different design styles, colour palettes and quality characteristics to more modern items.

A secondhand Persian carpet is much, much cheaper than a brand new Persian carpet.

In fact, an authentic handknotted secondhand Persian carpet is even cheaper than a store-bought modern mass-produced carpet made from synthetics that will shear down into harmful micro-particles.
