Shiraz Persian Carpets: Woven Traditions from Iran’s Cultural Heartland

Origin & Heritage
Shiraz carpets come from the Fars Province in southern Iran, particularly from tribal groups such as the Qashqai, Khamseh, and Luri. The city of Shiraz, rich in poetry and history, lends its name to these deeply traditional tribal weaves.

Artisanal Craftsmanship
Each carpet is hand-knotted by nomadic artisans using wool from their own flocks. The knotting style is typically Persian (asymmetrical), and the weave is often coarser than city rugs, adding charm and character.

Design Traits
Expect bold geometric patterns, diamond-shaped medallions, and symbolic tribal motifs like birds, flowers, and animals. The colours are rich and earthy—deep reds, browns, blues—naturally dyed using plant-based pigments.

Time to Weave
Due to their relatively coarse weave, Shiraz carpets can be completed faster than finer city rugs. A medium-sized piece can take a few months to weave by hand, depending on the intricacy of the design and knot count.

Cultural Symbolism
These carpets reflect the daily lives, stories, and beliefs of nomadic communities. Many motifs serve as protective symbols or expressions of identity passed down through generations.

Durability & Use
Shiraz rugs are made entirely from wool, making them naturally biodegradable and long-lasting. Their rustic charm and sturdiness make them ideal for high-traffic areas or earthy, eclectic interiors.
